Free AI mock interview: practice with a live AI interviewer

Placed is a mock interview for software engineers where the interviewer is an AI you talk to. It asks the question, listens to your approach, asks follow-up questions, and scores you afterwards on the same rubric every time. You can start without an account.

What it is

A timed interview round, run by a voice interviewer, in the format real software engineering interviews use. In a coding round you get an editor that runs your code against tests; in system design, a diagram canvas the interviewer can see. The interviewer follows up on what you say, so the practice is in explaining your thinking under a clock, not only in getting an answer.

How scoring works

Each kind of round has a fixed rubric with written anchors for each score. After the session, a grader reads the transcript and your code and scores each criterion from 0 to 10, deducting by how much each mistake would matter in a real interview. It only credits what you actually did. A free account sees the scores and the two things to fix first; Pro adds why each criterion scored what it did, with the quotes from your session behind it. How grading works.

Free, and what Pro adds

  • Start an interview without an account.
  • A free account: 3 scored interviews a month in any track, with scores and the top two fixes.
  • Pro: unlimited interviews and the full report, for $19 a month or $119 a year.

Interviewing somewhere that uses AI in the round?

Meta, Google, Canva and DoorDash have added coding rounds with an AI assistant, and others ban AI outright. The guide to AI-enabled coding interviews covers each company with sources, and the company packs list which Placed rounds to practice for each.

Questions people ask

Is the AI mock interview really free?

Yes. You can start an interview without an account. A free account gets 3 scored interviews a month across every track, with the scores and the top two things to fix. Pro is $19 a month for unlimited interviews and the full report.

Do I talk to the AI interviewer out loud?

Yes. The interviewer speaks, listens and asks follow-up questions, the way a person would in a real interview. You can also type.

How is the interview scored?

Against a fixed rubric for that kind of round, from 0 to 10 per criterion. The grader only credits what you actually did in the session, and on Pro each score is tied to the moment in your transcript it is based on.

What kinds of interviews can I practice?

Coding, system design, behavioral, AI-assisted coding and AI fluency, plus timed online assessments and shorter rounds such as the resume grill.

Which programming languages are supported?

The coding editor runs code in eight languages, including Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, C++, Go, Rust and C#.

How is this different from asking ChatGPT to interview me?

A chatbot reads your code and guesses whether it works, and its feedback changes each time you ask. Placed runs your code against tests, keeps time, and scores every session on the same rubric, so two reports can be compared.
